Karl von Terzaghi (1883 - 1963) Austrian civil engineer and geologist
Terzaghi is called as the father of soil mechanics. His works on soil had greatly revolutionized the study on soil and then the design of works related to earth structures. it was only after his works that the soil was considered as an engineering material.
He was professor of soil mechanics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA)
